Abstract

In future bioethanol, an adavanced biofuel, should be used as alternative or as additive for petrol. Because of the extensive production process the yield is still low. Partial this effect is because of the formation of byproducts (like acetic acid, formic acid etc.) during the steam explosion pretreatment, which have an inhibiting influence on the hydrolysis an/or fermentation. Also the preservatives sorbic acid and benzoic acid in the enzyme suspension could effect an inhibition. Derived from fermentation tests with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae the potential of inhibition of these substances could be determined. Fermentation tests with Saccharomyces cerevisiae show that concentrations of 5 g/l acetic acid and 1 g/l formic acid cause a clear inhibition. Propionic acid, hydroxylmethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural have no influence on the fermentation. The preservatives benzoic acid and sorbic acid effect an inhibition from a concentration of 0,3 g/l. These results provide the necessity for further research in separation of acetic acid and formic acid with membrane technology and adaption of yeast.
