Abstract

We examine the section Ce(Ni1 - xGax)5 in the range x = 0 to 0.6 and report on structural, magnetic, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Both a non-magnetic ground state of Ce atoms and an intermediate valence observed from the LIII absorption edge are in agreement with a partial occu valence decreases linearly when the Ga concentration increases, but never reaches a value that is very close to 3 + as observed in heavy-fermion systems.
