Abstract

The longitudinal velocity compression of a supersonic atomic beam (mean velocity v0; initial velocity spread Δvi) by light pressure from two counterpropagating laser fields is studied. A Monte‐Carlo simulation shows that the final velocity ratio v0/Δvf can exceed 1000 in a simple and compact experimental setup.
