Abstract
The cardiovascular system is responsible for circulating blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues, and removing waste products, while also helping to regulate body temperature and to support the immune system's defense mechanisms. Based on a literature review of 64 empirical studies, we analyze how interactions with different digital technologies affect physiological responses related to the cardiovascular system. We group the studies into seven major themes: emotion, gaming and control, health, mental effort and strain, stress, usability and user satisfaction, and virtual reality and simulation. Moreover, our review also identifies avenues for future research aimed at improving user experience and promoting healthier interactions with digital technologies. Overall, this review highlights the importance of integrating cardiovascular considerations into HCI design and research to promote user well-being in an increasingly digital world.
