Abstract
This article focuses on geographic visualizations and their usability, in particular on the frequently used choropleth maps and their combinations with classic business diagrams (combined visualizations), which are relevant in self-service reporting of big data. The results of our online study show that design variants in the form of a combination of classic choropleth maps with bar or integrated pie charts lead to a significant improvement in effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. The integration of zoom functions into the existing interaction concepts, especially in the case of a land map with integrated pie charts, additionally increases the effectiveness and efficiency of the design variants and thus leads to significant advantages in the user-friendliness of these geographical visualizations compared to the classic standard in d3 libraries and software tools in reporting.
