    Abstract

This qualitative research study examines the concept of Familienwohnen (family-based residential support) in Upper Austria as an innovative support service provided by the regional Child and Youth Welfare Services (KJH OÖ) on behalf of SOS-Kinderdorf Altmünster. The aim is to identify the potential for further development of the program by analyzing and evaluating the diverse perspectives of the involved stakeholders. The research project was initially designed with three phases of data collection; however, the third phase could not be implemented due to insufficient participation from the statutory child and youth welfare services. In the first phase, qualitative interviews were conducted with service users and professionals. The results were then discussed in a focus group with service providers. The findings highlight potential for development in areas such as participatory goal setting, exchange between families, communication between Familienwohnen and authorities, and inter-institutional networking. Overall, the interviewed stakeholders describe Familienwohnen in Upper Austria as a positive and effective measure for stabilizing family systems. This study thus provides initial empirical insights into a previously under-researched field and concludes with practice-oriented recommendations for further development of the service.
