Abstract

The counseling of people with substance issues is considered to be tedious and difficult. They have a variety of problems and it seems to be inconclusive whether counseling can be effective considering the number and complexity of issues. The question remains: What effect does systemic counseling of polytoxicomanic drug users have on their ability to cope with life transition processes? The aim of this paper is to find out, by means of focused interviews and a content analysis, whether counseling indeed has an effect. For this purpose former drug users who have sought advice and now lead successful and independent lives are interviewed. The results of the study show, in particular, three spheres of action of systemic counseling: the promotion of coping skills, guidance and motivation to solve ambivalent and ambiguous situations and the promotion of self- responsibility and autonomy through respect for the internal guiding mechanisms of people. Systemic counseling of polytoxicomanic drug users shows positive effects in coping with life transitions. However, these effects are not a quick solution to the problems, but support skills for effective self- driven coping with the challenges of everyday life.
