Abstract
This paper presents a new approach for the repeatedly discussed problem of automatic software conversion from Fortran to Ada. Although the approach allows the translation of the full set of Fortran 77 language constructs, the generated programs are highly efficient. The involved concepts are presented and the structure as well as functionality of the two translator components are explained. While compilation details are deliberately skipped, the impact of translation on important program characteristics — especially on the run time — is shown by the example of a benchmark program.
