Abstract

Since more than 100 years buffers and chain coupler are the standard train coupling system used in Europe. Its handling is cost-intensive and might be dangerous as well. Up to now automatic coupling devices have not yet been introduced. Published solutions for the automatic handling of the screw coupling have not been implemented in practice. This paper presents a mechatronic solution which has been developed and tested in practice. The solution is based on the mechanical situation of the screw coupling and an anlysis of the processes within a marshalling yard.
