Determination of the relevant material parameters for the radiation heating of semifinished plastic products for thermoforming

Abstract

Thermoforming of plastics is widely used for the production of cups, “inliners” of refrigerators and interior parts of cars for example. The process can be subdivided in three basic steps: heating of the semifin-ished product (film or sheet), forming and cooling. The heating step de-termines the cycle time and the formability of the polymer. A physical model for the description of the heating step is described in this paper. The parameters reflection and penetration depth of the radiated heat in-fluence the progression of the heating step. A measuring method to de-termine these properties as a function of wavelength is described and first measuring results are presented.
