Current Challenges of Scientific Continuing Education in Austria with Consideration of an Extended Understanding of Professionalization and Professionalism

Abstract

The present article discusses individual aspects of professionalization and professionalism regarding the positioning of continuing education departments in the Austrian higher education institutions (HEI). Increasingly there is an internal, from the HEI, as well as external, from external stakeholders, demand for „professionalism“ of continuing education during the past years. This development must be conveyed in relation to the specific characteristics of continuing education, as well as the operational environment of and increasing demands towards to HEI. Current action fields and future challenges will be described from the aspect of professionalism.
