Abstract
Buffers and screw coupling is still the standard train coupling system used in Europe. Uncoupling is done by a worker who must climb between the wagons. First he separates the brake hoses and then he winds the turnbuckle handle to loose position and then he unhooks the screw coupling. Coupling is even more complicated. Based on the mechanical analysis of the screw coupling, the recognition of deficiencies of former automation concepts and the intense use of sensor and data analysis techniques, a mechatronic system concerning the automatic uncoupling is being developed. First test done on moving rail wagons at the marshalling yard in Linz, Austria are promising.
