Abstract

The Republic of Austria is a parliamentary federal democracy with nearly 8.6 million inhabitants situated in the centre of Europe. Like its neighboring countries Germany and Switzerland, it is part of the larger German language area. The small size of the state and the existence of a big neighboring market that shares the same language highly influence Austria’s media landscape. This entry in turn discusses the newspaper and magazine, television and film, radio, and online media sectors in Austria. It then describes the country’s media regulations and subsidies.
