EU Kids Online V - European Children's and Adolsecents' Online Opportunities and Risks

Project Details

Description

"EU Kids Online is a multinational research network with partner institutions in 33 European countries. Building on nearly two decades of expertise, the network is launching a new research wave – EU Kids Online V.
At the core of EU Kids Online V is a representative survey of students aged 9 to 17 in more than 20 European countries, including Austria. The aim is to generate internationally comparable and up-to-date insights into how adolescents use and engage with digital technologies. The focus lies on the online experiences of children and young people, as well as the associated opportunities and risks. The survey also gathers data on digital competences, the use of algorithms and generative AI, children’s digital rights, and parental mediation. Elisabeth Staksrud at the University of Oslo, Norway, coordinates both the EU Kids Online network and the representative survey.
EU Kids Online V also conducts qualitative comparative studies on current issues. The Austrian EU Kids Online team is involved in one such study, which explores the experiences of young people (aged 13–17) with generative artificial intelligence. Using semi-structured interviews and group discussions, the study investigates how young people interact with generative AI tools such as chatbots and image generators, the purposes for which they use them, their perceptions of these technologies, and the relevance of generative AI in relation to privacy, security, and digital rights. In addition to 16 European countries, research teams from the Global South – including Kenya, Brazil, and India – are also participating. This sub-study is coordinated by Giovanna Mascheroni at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy.
The Austrian team consists of Christina Ortner from the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences, Sascha Trültzsch-Wijnen from the University of Salzburg, and Christine Trültzsch-Wijnen and Anna Eder-Jahn from the Salzburg Stefan Zweig University of Education."
