Description

This contribution deals with the 3D characterization of fibre reinforced polymers by the use of X-ray tomography. A software pipeline for the extraction of single straight fibers was extended for the characterization of cellulose fibres. These fibres are flexible and can be easily bent or knotted during injection moulding. The accurate determination of length and orientation were achieved by tracing every single fibre after extraction. The results of this study show big differences of fibre length determined by different methods because of the bending. Visualization techniques have been developed that allow for classification of fibres regarding their length or orientation. This makes a visual inspection of materials containing even several thousand fibres possible.
