The influence of polymer type on the interfacial shear strength of sisal fibre reinforced composites

Abstract

In this work we investigated the influence polymer type on the interface and properties of thermoplastic polymers reinforced with sisal fibers. On the one hand, single fiber pull out tests have been carried out to yield interfacial shear strengths, on the other hand we evaluated composites, produced via extrusion and injection molding, for properties like tensile strength. Composite properties were evaluated with rule-of-mixtures, to get data for interface strength which was discussed in comparison with the results from single fiber pull out testing. We found satisfactory agreement between the differently acquired interfacial shear strengths. The applied models are valid for these composites and can be used for property estimation as well as a tool for getting deeper insight into the behavior of sisal fiber reinforced thermoplastics.
