Abstract
Tethered satellite systems, that is satellites in orbital motion connected by thin flexible cables up to a length of 100 km, are a new technology of space exploration. We give some applications which partly have been realized in missions and explain basic facts of mechanical modelling of such systems. A formulation of the equations of motion, especially suited for very stiff or inextensible tethers is given.
