Practical effects of vendor managed inventory (VMI) on used logistics technologies

Abstract

Supply chain collaborations such as vender-managed inventory (VMI) target the quality and effectiveness of supply networks and a lot of scientific research as well as practical studies have analysed VMI. Nevertheless, its impact on in-house logistic technologies has not been sufficiently researched so far and especially for small and medium sized companies the related effects are very rarely documented. However, the relationship between vendor managed inventory (VMI) and Intralogistics, is gaining in importance. Collaborations, as a part of daily business, have great potential to simplify the processes in the external flow of goods and similar expectations are valid for in-house material flows, too. To bridge the identified lack of knowledge, a new model for the design of equipment and processes has been developed. The purpose of this paper is to identify potentials for the supply chain partners and to create value in future collaboration approaches. The presented results are based on empirical best practice research of the spare parts and automotive industry.
