Abstract
Automation in rail operations is particularly widespread in passenger transport thanks to ATO over ETCS and the standardized degrees of automation (GoA). While train journeys already benefit from these technologies, shunting operations remain largely manual - despite staff shortages and high safety risks. Greater automation here could not only bring operational efficiency and economic benefits, but also significantly improve staff safety. This article examines the potential and challenges of automation in shunting operations and its integration into a newly developed GoA taxonomy.
