Meeting Expectations: Exploring Challenges in Cross-Media Adaptation of Established Stories into New Forms

Publikation: KonferenzbeitragPapierBegutachtung

Abstract

Cross-media adaptation and transmedia storytelling have become integral of today’s evolving landscape of visual media. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities of adapting narratives across different plat-forms, including literature, film, television, and video games. While cross-media adaptations aim to retell a story in a new format, transmedia story-telling expands a fictional universe across multiple media, engaging audi-ences in unique ways. However, maintaining narrative fidelity, balancing creative liberties, and addressing audience expectations remain critical challenges. A key case study is Avatar: The Last Airbender, a highly ac-claimed animated series that has undergone multiple live-action adapta-tions. The 2010 film directed by M. Night Shyamalan was widely criticized for its rushed storytelling, casting choices, and visual effects, whereas Net-flix’s 2024 adaptation sought to improve on these shortcomings through culturally authentic casting, refined storytelling, and enhanced visual ef-fects. Despite these improvements, the adaptation still faced criticism, par-ticularly for its condensed plot and pacing. Technological advancements, including CGI, procedural 3D design, and motion capture, have played a crucial role in modern adaptations, enabling a more immersive storytelling experience. Looking ahead, innovations such as virtual reality augmented reality, and artificial intelligence may revolutionize the adaptation process, offering new levels of interactivity and audience engagement. Ultimately, this paper questions the necessity of constant remakes and whether adapta-tions genuinely contribute to storytelling or merely capitalize on existing intellectual properties. A successful adaptation must strike a balance be-tween honoring the original material and leveraging the unique strengths of the new medium.
