Abstract

We investigate short period MnTe/CdTe superlattices by EPR, SQUID susceptometry and polarized photoluminescence. All three methods indicate the existence of super paramagnetic clusters in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. We explain this finding in terms of a local antiferromagnetic breakdown at the interfaces which is caused by the ferromagnetic sp-d exchange within localized and confined states. These polaronic effects are observed only up to a critical MnTe thickness of 5 monolayers per period. For this thickness, correlation of magnetic moments is observed.
