LNG as a fuel technology for realizing sustainable transport processes in Central Europe

Abstract

Recently, liquefied natural gas (LNG) has become a very promising alternative fuel technology for long-distance transports as it causes 20% less CO2, 80-90% less NOx and almost zero PM and SOx emissions compared to diesel. However, large areas of Central and Eastern Europe are still lacking the infrastructure which would be necessary to stimulate the widespread application of LNG. The aim of the present work is to trigger the provision of this infrastructure by assessing the existing demand for LNG. Besides, the customer needs towards LNG application are determined to further foster the process of implementing LNG. The expert interviews revealed that demand for LNG as a sustainable fuel technology would exist under certain conditions but that there are several requirements which must be fulfilled to fully establish LNG.
