Abstract

The problems emerging from the need to maintain several versions of a program which are implemented in different programming languages led to the definition of a new “generic” language called JAL, serving as a vehicle for implementing truly portable systems. The characteristics of JAL have been derived from Modula-2, Pascal, Ada and C and the language is implemented by means of two components: a compiler, translating JAL to one of the base languages (instantiating JAL with a base language) and a set of predefined support modules.
