Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to identify barriers, challenges and plans for the use of intelligent shelves for automatic out of shelf detection in grocery and drugstore retail in the DACH region.
Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is based on primary research (i.e. qualitative research with semi-structured interviews).
Findings – The underlying applied research approach captures the status quo in dealing with out of shelf and possible deployment scenarios and plans for intelligent shelves with a focus on the automatic detection of out of shelf in grocery and drugstore retail in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Although only a few retailers currently have concrete plans for deployment, technological support for detecting out of shelf is proven to be highly relevant for most of the companies surveyed. Likewise, the technologies are expected to mature and become more cost-effective in the coming years.
Practical implications – This study provides retailers as well as technology provider with an insight into the opinions of grocery and drugstore retailers in German-speaking countries on the subject of intelligent shelves and automatic out of shelf detection. Their own views can be compared with the results of the survey and critically reviewed. The survey also supports technology provider in the further development of their systems.
Originality/value – This is the first study to capture retailers' views on the use of intelligent shelves to reduce out of shelf in stores.
