Abstract

E-learning offers different opportunities, among which the most prevalent ones are time and location independent learning and minimization of costs for training. However, there are trends in the e-learning sector that encourage offering courses that are predominantly distributing information. These “new” concepts are called MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). What has not been given much thought yet is the concept of ethnical culture and different learning approaches. For this reason, this paper provides a short introduction into e-learning, then introducing MOOCs. It will be shown that the different forms of e-learning are more technical driven and mostly in line of the learning approach Behaviorism. Especially in MOOCs it will be visualized that individual characteristics like the multicul-tural background of learners or the different possibilities of learning are not considered. In this position paper eMOOCs are presented as a possible way to extend the MOOC and e-learning landscape. In the final section all aspects are summarized and design principles are introduced as one possible way for the implementation of eMOOCs.
