Purpose
This paper explores the characteristics and challenges associated of transitioning to a digitalized, decentralized, and transparent supply chain (SC). It specifically addresses the complexities of a military SC, including legal, IT systems, organizational structures, and hierarchical aspects.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on a literature review, we conduct expert interviews to gain insights into the current state and challenges of the SC. Additionally, existing processes are modelled using the Business Process Model and Notation.
Findings
The research reveals that while digitalization offers significant opportunities for enhancing transparency and efficiency in military SC, it also presents unique challenges. These include navigating legal complexities, integrating specific IT systems, managing organizational dynamics, and addressing hierarchical challenges. The study highlights the importance of strategic planning and the integration of advanced technologies.
