An Exploratory Study of Collaborative Decision Making in Hybrid Teams

Abstract

Recent years have shown considerable increase of remote and hybrid work, and a focus on democratizing decision making as a collaborative rather than an individual process. In the exploratory study described in this paper, we investigate the process of collaborative decision making, at the example of two hybrid teams collaborating on a design task in the domain of e-learning. We explore teams' collaborative interaction referring to Simon's prominent model (including the phases Intelligence, Design, and Choice), and utilize territoriality and collaborative coupling as analytical lenses well-established in the research field of CSCW. Our findings - based on observation and recordings - are then used to derive several hypotheses, aiming to inform future larger-scale studies on collaborative decision making in hybrid teams.
