An Experience Sampling Study to Evaluate Why Users Dismiss Smartphone Notifications

Abstract

Smartphone users receive many notifications and frequently deactivate notifications from various application categories. To develop more intelligent notification systems in the future, knowledge of why users dismiss notifications is essential. Consequently, we conducted an experiment with N=17 participants using the experience sampling method. Whenever participants dismissed (i.e., "swiped away'') a notification, they immediately had to provide a reason. Our results indicate that many dismissed notifications are still being considered as valuable as the notifications themselves contain valid information. Further, the individual reasons differ per app category, and also, the time until users interact with a notification correlates with their evaluation of being of value or not. We conclude with a list of recommendations for notification management systems.
