AI Creativity in the Light of Autonomy

Abstract

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of creativity are rapidly being applied to many established art forms. AI is expected to play a permanent role in various art forms in the future. Yet one fundamentally new aspect of the use of technology in an artistic setting has not received as much attention. This is the aspect of autonomy in a creative, collaborative environment. While previous instruments, tools, and software always followed the expectations of the human users (in terms of the expectable consequences of human’s actions), creative systems act with some degree of autonomy. Autonomy emerges as a direct consequence of creativity: The more the outcome can be expected, the less the system can be considered creative. At the same time, the more autonomously the system acts, the less it can be controlled by humans. This leads to a completely new situation when it comes to interaction with human counterparts, as human artists always pursue their personal artistic intentions, directions, and desires. This chapter explores different aspects of human-AI interaction in a creative artistic environment. It also highlights the need for further research on the role of humans in such a creative environment with AI for artistic purposes.
