* live demo of "Operation Phrike" at VR Sci Expo: http://vrscifest.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/VR-Sci-Expo-MAP.pdf * panel discussion on 14.5.2017 Content The VR-software project „Operation Phrike“ (from greek goddess of horror and thrill and greek verb φρίττω, i.e. trembling) was developed by a group of software-engineering students at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, School of Informatics, Communications and Media, Campus Hagenberg, from 2015-2016. The goal of this project is to utilize VR technology to simulate situations of fear for probands that need to be conquered. The project was developed in cooperation with the Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, Colonel Dr. Reinhard Slanic, to allow for novel training methods in the education of future officers and military leaders. For future officers in the army it is of significant importance to experience self-efficacy as well as self-awareness in situations of high danger to experience emotional appeals and to discover ones current individual limits as room for future improvement. The way the recruits handle the critical situations is evaluated on a physiological level by utilizing biofeedback sensor and on the other hand in a psychological level by the supervising instructor. As VR device, Oculus Rift glasses in DK2 as well as the productive version are utilized. To allow for a high level of immersion, the movements of the proband can be steered by tracking in-place walking actions for indicating forward movement as well as left and right hand-balancing for controlling the movement direction and orientation. Both, the walking vertical knee movement indicating forward movement, as well as the hand-based balancing are tracked by Kinect sensors. An optionally applicable Myo wristband allows for steering the walking / running speed. Effects of the VR simulation on the cardiovascular system are evaluated by utilizing biofeedback sensors like g.Tec or Schuhfried sensors during the examination to measure changes of the heart rate, temperature, skin conductance and the stress level in general. These quantitative measurements are combined with physical findings like speed, acceleration or length of the chosen walking path – all correlated with the presented VR content (screen capture) on the timeline. As 3D engine for the precisely modelled topographies of our developed scenarios Unreal game engine is utilized. Further Material A short Youtube movie showing the software-engineering group, namely Dinu Marius, Frauscher Josef, Horner Sandra, Juttla Gurpreet, Kohlendorfer Roland, Mayr Wolfgang, Neumair Thomas, Neumüller Christian, Pham Hoang and Steinke Alexander during the project engineering lecture can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gETEAHwE2d4. To address the agility of this project enterprise, SCRUM was applied as process model.
